peg/machine tuner alternatives

I made one using dowels as a simple tuner.  The screw at the base end pulls it tight to the headstock and it stays in tune.  I sprinkled salt in the recess for friction.

Hey, really dig this style and would like a little more info if you would be so kind. It sounds like they are friction pegs that you then hold in place with a screw...is that the basic gist?
